LEED is an internationally recognized benchmark for what it means to have a green building. Now, with the LEED International Program, the rating systems represent global consistency, a regional approach, and local outreach and support – and are more applicable to projects worldwide than ever before.

GLOBAL, REGIONAL, LOCAL
In communities around the world, green building s offering real, measurable results in humanity's efforts to reduce our global carbon footprint and promote environmental, economic and social prosperity. In an increasingly connected world, we must work together to embrace the challenge of developing a system that unites us in a global community, while recognizing our local realities.
Global Consistency
Over the years, green building pioneers in communities worldwide have found many innovative ways to adapt LEED locally. Built on the lessons learned from those experiences, LEED emphasizes global consistency at its core.
Regional Approach
International options provide alternative paths toward achieving LEED credits that can present challenges to project teams outside the United States. Rating systems with international options will be available in early 2011. Absolute values focused on performance metrics will replace referenced standards whenever possible. This will happen as part of LEED's ongoing evolution process.
Local Outreach and Support
Even in a global system, the work of green building happens locally. The LEED International Program supports project teams, policy and government leaders, advocates, educators and others worldwide with the resources they need for success:
- KNOWLEDGE AND TRAINING: Discover the many ways you can access quality education for yourself, your project team members, facilities managers, decision-makers and other stakeholders no matter where you are in the world.
- ADVOCACY AND OUTREACH: Access the resources you need to spread the word about LEED in your community.
- MEMBERSHIP: Learn what membership means for your organization.
- PROFESSIONAL CREDENTIALS: Identify yourself as a leader in green building technology, best practices, and the rapidly evolving LEED rating systems by earning your LEED Professional Credential.

ALTERNATIVE COMPLIANCE PATHS (ACPs)
The Alternative Compliance Paths for projects outside the United States were created to provide a global approach to
LEED. This new approach focuses on the crucial cross cutting issues that most international projects face.

BREEAM EQUIVALENCY FOR LEED
To better serve projects teams working globally and using multiple green building rating systems the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is exploring commonalities between LEED and other systems that share the same mission, intent, effort and demonstration of leadership. The first step in this process begins with the BREEAM system. With this step, projects will be able to achieve points towards LEED certification, by demonstrating what has been done to corresponding credits in BREEAM.
