Next Steps in USGBC's Consensus Process for Examining Wood and Wood Certification in the LEED Green Building Rating System

June 30, 2006 (Washington, DC) - At its May meeting, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) Board of Directors directed the USGBC's LEED Steering Committee (LSC) to address bio-based materials within LEED through USGBC's fair, open and transparent consensus process.

During the June 26 LSC meeting, the committee issued a formal charge to the Materials & Resources Technical Advisory Group (MR TAG) to examine biobased credits within LEED.

As with any change to the LEED rating system, the proposal will follow USGBC's consensus process. The LSC's formal charge is the first in a series of steps in USGBC's consensus based committee process that is required for all revisions to the LEED rating system.

Following the LSC charge, the MR TAG's recommendations will be made to the LSC in the form of revised credit language and an accompanying rationale. The yet to be developed revisions will be forwarded to USGBC Board of Director's Executive Committee, and the public comment period and member ballot will follow. A draft time line for the MR TAG's scope of work is available along with the formal charge.
