Bike with us to Greenbuild!
The USGBC Students program is now accepting applications from vibrant, passionate students to become a part of the Green Apple Bike Tour this November! We are looking for 15 members of USGBC Students groups of diverse academic backgrounds and skill to make up our team of cyclists.
Last year, 20 USGBC Students took a bus from Ithaca, NY to Greenbuild in San Francisco, CA on our Green Apple Bus Tour to Greenbuild. Traveling 3,247 carbon-offset miles, student leaders from seven colleges completed six service projects along the way to promote healthy, sustainable schools. Ranging from an alternative energy science fair and building a “living wall” to creating recycled planters, these students were able to directly reach hundreds of students and community members and gain visibility to thousands through local media outlets.
This year, the USGBC Students program will be going the distance again! In November 2013, 15 USGBC Students will have the opportunity to cycle from Washington, D.C. to Philadelphia, PA to spread awareness around sustainable schools and make a tangible difference in communities along the way. This project, driven and designed by a team of student leaders, will incorporate three hands-on service projects and public awareness initiatives around healthy schools. You’ll be able to follow our progress through the Center for Green Schools website and social media. We’re also looking to engage USGBC Chapters, community members and schools along the way. This project will not be possible without the financial and in-kind donations of generous sponsors. If you have a great idea to engage the Bike Tour while we’re on our journey or would like to explore sponsorship options, please contact Hannah Debelius.
Student participants will have the experience of a lifetime engaging communities, working on sustainable service projects, and advancing their sustainability careers .The trip will ride from November 12-19 with an average of 50-60 miles a day for a total of five days and three days of service projects. Participants will remain in Philadelphia November 19-22 to share their experience and represent the Green Apple initiative as "Green Apple Student Ambassadors" while attending Greenbuild 2013. USGBC is happy to work with students and their institutions to arrange for earning course credit through involvement with this project. If you're a driven, dedicated member of a USGBC Students group with a passion for sustainability and a spirit of adventure, apply to communicate your interest in participating in the Green Apple Bike Trip.
We will be accepting applications until 5 p.m. EST on Wednesday, September 4, and only members of active USGBC students groups will be considered. Students will be responsible for covering personal costs not otherwise provided by program sponsorship. If you have additional questions or you are a community member looking to be involved locally, please e-mail Hannah Debelius.
