Kicking Off the School Year: Greening Sacramento City Unified School Districts

Published on Written by Posted in Center for Green Schools

With the school year just beginning, students are excited about bringing green practices to their schools. One of the main projects that I will be working on during my with Sacramento City Unified Schools Districts is their “Project Green” initiative. This program, which is being piloted at Theodore Judah Elementary School and Rosemont High School, allows students to perform “green school audits” at their school to evaluate day-to-day operations. Based on their evaluations, students will make recommendations to physically change their school buildings, along with changing occupant behavior and implementing programs across the school to reduce consumption.

Here’s a video of Superintendent Jonathan Raymond announcing Project Green on Earth Day:

This Saturday, Sept. 10, students from the Rosemont Green Team will have a table at the Healthy Living Fair, happening at another SCUSD elementary school. The students will be talking to people about Project Green, as well as giving instructions for doing a green home audit.

I can't wait to see what SCUSD students accomplish this year with greening their schools. Stay tuned for more updates on our progress!

“I didn't come to green our schools, but I realized how important it was along the way” - Jonathan P. Raymond, Superintendent of Sacramento City Unified School District
