New Policy Brief Highlights the Federal Government’s Success with LEED
There sure has been a lot of talk about the federal government’s use of LEED lately.
Last week, the National Research Council released a report that reaffirmed what we’ve been saying all along—that LEED makes good economic sense. They recommended that the Department of Defense should require its new buildings or major renovations to be designed to achieve at least LEED Silver certification.
The week before that, the General Services Administration (GSA) released a request for information (RFI) that asserted the value of green building rating systems like LEED and asked for public comments to help inform their recommendation to the Secretary of Energy identifying which path is most likely to ensure a comprehensive and environmentally-sound approach to the certification of green Federal buildings. This RFI comes after more than 1,250 businesses and organizations urged GSA to continue to use LEED to improve the energy and environmental performance of its federal building portfolio.
With all that’s going on in the federal space regarding green building, USGBC has developed a new market brief to help simplify the message and show how LEED helps federal facilities meet their environmental objectives. The brief – LEED in the Public Sector – explains some of the ways that LEED has been helping save taxpayer dollars, create jobs and promote accountability. Additionally, the brief highlights green building leadership in government agencies and how they benefit from using LEED.
With over 100 million square feet of federal buildings LEED certified, and approximately 1,400 active LEED accredited professionals working in the federal government, it’s clear that LEED is helping federal agencies and departments lead by example and achieve the many benefits of green building.
