USGBC recently hosted our first Green Apple Bike Tour, an eight-day biking adventure from DC to Philadelphia with students and emerging professionals, led by the Center for Green Schools at USGBC. Green Apple is an initiative of the Center for Green Schools to put all children in schools where they have clean and healthy air to breathe, where energy and resources are conserved, and where they can be inspired to dream of a brighter future.

We wanted to not only educate schools on the importance of sustainability, but help them become more sustainable in the process. We stopped at three schools along our way to USGBC’s Greenbuild Conference and Expo, which took place in Philadelphia at the end of November. We had the opportunity to help with green initiatives like creating living walls for Center City Public Charter School’s playground in Washington, DC, winterizing butterfly gardens at Harrisburg Area Community College in Harrisburg, PA, and leading education sessions at GW Carver High School in Philadelphia. For all fourteen of us, it was a road trip to remember!

250+ miles, three schools, and a few flat tires later we were warmly welcomed into Philadelphia by USGBC staff and supporters. It was the perfect way to start Greenbuild, and our journey served as a powerful symbol to the thousands of attendees that the principles we promote are alive in a global green movement that’s reshaping our world.
