Schoolyard revitalization effort in Philly wins USGBC Malcolm Lewis Award

Published on Written by Posted in Community

The USGBC Malcolm Lewis Volunteer IMPACT! Award recognizes a high-impact, volunteer-driven project or initiative.

In 2013, we received nine impressive nominations. Receiving over 2,000 likes, shares and comments on Facebook, the Hackett Schoolyard Revitalization Effort was chosen as the community favorite and was recognized at Greenbuild last week. It's a partnership that aims to transform the Hackett Schoolyard in Philadelphia into a vibrant, sustainable and green schoolyard.

This effort has resulted in community members forming a Friends of Hackett group, attending community meetings and volunteering for the Green Apple Day of Service. Local partners are a critical component of this effort, including the Delaware Valley Green Building Council, the Philadelphia Water Department, the Community Design Collaborative, Land Stewards, Villanova Lacrosse Team, and the School District of Philadelphia. Volunteers include Lisa Conway, Principal Randi Davila, Tom Schweiker, Allison Dean, Micah Hanson, Hermann Moser, Carla Castillo and Stephanie Chiorean. The effort has had early successes and volunteers have begun envisioning a long-term plan for the schoolyard transformation.

Congratulations to the Hackett Schoolyard team!

Volunteers are the lifeblood of the green building movement. Join your local chapter and make an impact in your community.
