The Connect the Dots program challenges schools across Virginia to develop and implement the most creative, effective, no or low cost sustainable practices for their schools. The program aims to increase environmental stewardship, strengthen community outreach, encourage creativity and complement curriculum development. Schools are matched with volunteer mentors who help to plan projects and make connections to environmental resources.

The schools that most effectively meet this challenge are recognized and awarded for their achievements. Participation in the Challenge requires a project submission, due to USGBC Greater Virginia for jury review at the end of March. Schools are also encouraged to participate in the Green Apple Day of Service.

The goals of the Connect the Dots program are to energize sustainable curriculum in our schools; lower school operating maintenance costs; increase facilities' indoor air quality; and to conserve our natural resources while encouraging students to think creatively about sustainability.
