The results of the LEED 2009 energy performance update ballot are in! The proposed change to the Energy and Atmosphere category in LEED 2009 has passed the ballot with 78.6 percent of the consensus body voting in favor of the update. A minimum of two-thirds approval is needed for any balloted measure.

The final ballot results (by balance category) were:

  • Producer: 87.9 percent affirmative
  • User: 77.5 percent affirmative
  • General interest: 72.7 percent affirmative

The LEED 2009 energy performance update is a proposed increase to the minimum energy performance thresholds. This change is applicable to the LEED 2009 BD+C, ID+C, and LEED 2008 Multifamily Midrise rating systems and does not affect LEED 2009 O+M, ND or LEED 2008 Homes. With this change, project teams will be asked to earn a minimum of four points in the energy performance credits. The referenced energy standard and modeling requirements in LEED 2009 will not change; buildings falling under the proposed change can use the same methodologies and referenced standards, but will need to earn additional points in order to achieve certification.

Next steps

Beginning on April 8, 2016, new projects registering for LEED 2009/2008 under the rating systems mentioned above will be required to meet this new threshold. Thus, this change will apply to LEED projects registering between April 8, 2016 and October 31, 2016 (the last day to register a project under LEED 2009).
