We ask a lot from windows: energy efficiency, aesthetics, durability, affordability, and more. Which window frame materials and low-e glazing options balance these choices best? This course explores all the options and decodes the performance labels we see when buying windows.

Objectives

  • Choose a frame material based on its structural characteristics, thermal insulation, durability, maintenance requirements, cost, and effects on the environment.
  • Describe at least three glazing options.
  • Differentiate between R-value andU-factor and recognize how the U-factor relates to SHGC values.
  • List the factors involved in "tuning by orientation."
