Site Considerations: Where to Develop

This introductory seminar will provide an overview of the characteristics of a site that should be protected versus characteristicst hat make a site ideal for development. It will cover reasons why certain vulnerable sites should be avoided and why the develop ment of others would result in a more sustainable built environment. The lecture will focus on a group of strategies that specify whereto develop as opposed to how to develop. The latter is discussed in a separate lecture. This is a 200-level seminar for ind ividuals with no previous knowledge regarding sustainable sites initiatives. Individuals interested in land conservation, sustain abl e land use strategies such as mixed use development, new urbanism and transit-oriented development (TOD) are encouraged to tak e this seminar. Attendees will receive a broad overview of the different factors that can lead to an informed decision when selec ting asite for development.
- Analyze the reasons why certain sites should be protected from development.
- Identify 6 characteristics of sites where development is considered to be more sustainable to protect undeveloped, greenfield sites.
- Compare site locations based on 5 different sustainable strategies.
- Apply their understanding of protected versus sustainable site characteristics with a green building case study.
