Requirements

Design to minimize and control the entry of pollutants into buildings and later cross-contamination of regularly occupied areas through the following strategies:

  • Employ permanent entryway systems at least 10 feet (3 meters) long in the primary direction of travel to capture dirt and particulates entering the building at regularly used exterior entrances. Acceptable entryway systems include permanently installed grates, grill s and slotted systems that allow for cleaning underneath. Roll-out mats are acceptable only when maintained on a weekly basis by a contracted service organization.
  • Sufficiently exhaust each space where hazardous gases or chemicals may be present or used (e.g., garages, housekeeping and laundry areas, copying and printing rooms) to create negative pressure with respect to adjacent spaces when the doors to the room are closed. For each of these spaces, provide self-closing doors and deck-to-deck partitions or a hard-lid ceiling. The exhaust rate must be at least 0.50 cubic feet per minute (cfm) per square foot (0.15 cubic meters per minute per square meter) with no air recirculation. The pressure differential with the surrounding spaces must be at least 5 Pascals (Pa) (0.02 inches of water gauge) on average and 1 Pa (0.004 inches of water) at a minimum when the doors to the rooms are closed.
  • In mechanically ventilated buildings, each ventilation system that supplies outdoor air shall comply with the following:
    • Particle filters or air cleaning devices shall be provided to clean the outdoor air at any location prior to its introduction to occupied spaces.
    • These filters or devices shall meet one of the following criteria:
      • Filtration media is rated at a minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) of 13 or higher in accordance with ASHRAE Standard 52.2
      • Filtration media is Class F7 or higher, as defined by CEN Standard EN 779: 2002, Particulate air filters for general ventilation, Determination of the filtration performance

      • Sufficiently exhaust each space where hazardous gases or chemicals may be present or used (e.g., garages, housekeeping and laundry areas, copying and printing rooms) to create negative pressure with respect to adjacent spaces when the doors to the room are closed. For each of these spaces, provide self-closing doors and deck-to-deck partitions or a hard-lid ceiling. The exhaust rate must be at least 0.50 cubic feet per minute (cfm) per square foot (0.15 cubic meters per minute per square meter), with no air recirculation.       AND

      • Minimize the entry of contaminants into the building from vehicles, pesticides, herbicides, helipads, diesel generators, designated smoking areas, sources of exhaust air, and other sources of potential contaminant as follows:

        Provide pressurized entryway vestibules at high-volume building entrances:

        Ensure, through the results of mathematical modeling [e.g. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Gaussian Dispersion Analyses] and/or physical modeling (e.g. wind tunnel, tracer gas) that the air contaminant concentrations at outdoor air intakes are less than the thresholds established for the project under worst case meteorological conditions.

        Demonstrate that outside air intake concentrations pollutants meet the limits in the following table OR demonstrate by calculations that indoor concentrations shall not exceed 2.5% of the exposure limits listed in the table.

      Design to minimize and control cross-contamination of regularly occupied areas:

      • Where hazardous gases or chemicals may be present or used—garages, soiled utility areas, sterilization and disinfection areas, housekeeping/laundry areas and copying/printing rooms—exhaust each space sufficiently to create negative pressure with respect to adjacent spaces with the doors to the room closed.
        For each of these spaces, provide self-closing doors and deck-to-deck partitions or a hard-lid ceiling. The exhaust rate shall be at least six air changes per hour with no air re-circulation. (For rooms containing disinfectant and sterilant applications, provide a minimum of 12 air changes per hour.) The pressure differential with the surrounding spaces shall be at least 5 Pa (0.02 inches of water gauge) on average and 1 Pa (0.004 inches of water) at a minimum, when the doors to the rooms are closed.

      Design to minimize and control pollutant entry into buildings and later cross-contamination of regularly occupied areas:

      • Employ permanent entryway systems at least six feet long in the primary direction of travel to capture dirt and particulates from entering the building at all entryways that are directly connected to the outdoors. Acceptable entryway systems include permanently installed grates, grilles, or slotted systems that allow for cleaning underneath. Roll-out mats are only acceptable when maintained on a weekly basis by a contracted service organization. Qualifying entryways are those that serve as regular entry points into the core and shell of the building by building users. Projects that do not have entryway systems cannot achieve this credit.
      • Where hazardous gases or chemicals may be present or used (including garages, housekeeping/laundry areas and copying/printing rooms), exhaust each space sufficiently to create negative pressure with respect to adjacent spaces with the doors to the room closed. For each of these spaces, provide self-closing doors and deck to deck partitions or a hard lid ceiling. The exhaust rate shall be at least 0.50 cfm/sq.ft., with no air re-circulation. The pressure differential with the surrounding spaces shall be at least 5 Pa (0.02 inches of water gauge) on average and 1 Pa (0.004 inches of water) at a minimum when the doors to the rooms are closed.
      • In mechanically ventilated buildings, provide regularly occupied areas of the building with air filtration media prior to occupancy that provides a Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) of 13 or better. Filtration should be applied to process both return and outside air that is to be delivered as supply air.

      Utilize entryway systems (grilles, grates, mats) to reduce the amount of dirt, dust, pollen and other particles entering the building at all public entryways, and develop the associated cleaning strategies to maintain those entryway systems as well as exterior walkways. At least 10 feet of mats must be in place immediately inside all public entryways. Public entryways that are not in use or serve only as emergency exits are excluded from the requirements, as are private offices.

      Design to minimize and control pollutant or biological contaminant entry into the tenant space and later cross-contamination of regularly occupied areas:

      • Employ permanent entryway systems (such as grills or grates) to capture dirt, particulates, etc. from entering the building at all high-volume exterior entryways within the tenant area.
        AND
      • Where hazardous gasses or chemicals may be present or used (including housekeeping and laundry areas and copying and printing rooms), provide segregated areas with deck-to-deck partitions with separate outside exhausting at a rate of at least 0.5 cu. ft per minute per square foot, no air recirculation and operated at a negative pressure compared with the surrounding spaces of at least an average of 5 PA (0.02 inches of water gauge) and with a minimum of 1 PA (0.004 inches of water gauge) when the doors to the rooms are closed.
        AND
      • Provide containment drains plumbed for appropriate disposal of hazardous liquid wastes in spaces where water and chemical concentrate mixing occurs for maintenance, or laboratory purposes.
        AND
      • Provide regularly occupied areas of the tenant space with new air filtration media prior to occupancy that provides a Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) of 13 or better.

      Provide lighting controls for:

      • At least 90% of occupants, enabling adjustments to suit individual task needs and preferences,
        AND
      • All shared multi-occupant spaces where transient groups must share lighting controls.

      Have filters with particle removal effectiveness MERV 13 or greater in place over the performance period for all outside air intakes and for the returns for the re-circulation of inside air. Establish and follow a regular schedule for maintenance and replacement of these filters.

      Have in place over the performance period structural deck-to-deck partitions with separate outside exhausting, no air re-circulation and negative pressure to contain and isolate high volume copying/print rooms/fax stations. High volume means any copy machine, print or fax station with a monthly copy usage of more than 40,000 pages. This credit can also be earned by putting all copiers, printers, and fax machines exceeding a lower monthly capacity or usage threshold (selected by the building owner) in isolated separately ventilated rooms.

      Design to minimize and control pollutant entry into buildings and later cross-contamination of regularly occupied areas:

      • Employ permanent entryway systems at least six feet long in the primary direction of travel to capture dirt and particulates from entering the building at all entryways that are directly connected to the outdoors. Acceptable entryway systems include permanently installed grates, grilles, or slotted systems that allow for cleaning underneath. Roll-out mats are only acceptable when maintained on a weekly basis by a contracted service organization or school maintenance staff. Qualifying entryways are those that serve as regular entry points for building users.
      • Where hazardous gases or chemicals may be present or used (including garages, housekeeping/laundry areas, science laboratories, prep rooms, art rooms, shops of any kind, and copying/printing rooms), exhaust each space sufficiently to create negative pressure with respect to adjacent spaces with the doors to the room closed. For each of these spaces, provide self-closing doors and deck to deck partitions or a hard lid ceiling. The exhaust rate shall be at least 0.50 cfm/sq.ft., with no air re-circulation. The pressure differential with the surrounding spaces shall be at least 5 Pa (0.02 inches of water gauge) on average and 1 Pa (0.004 inches of water) at a minimum when the doors to the rooms are closed.
      • In mechanically ventilated buildings, provide regularly occupied areas of the building with air filtration media prior to occupancy that provides a Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) of 13 or better. Filtration should be applied to process both return and outside air that is to be delivered as supply air.

      • Employ permanent entryway systems (grills, grates, etc.) to capture dirt, particulates, etc. from entering the building at all high volume entryways.
      • Where chemical use occurs (including housekeeping areas and copying/printing rooms), provide segregated areas with deck to deck partitions with separate outside exhaust at a rate of at least 0.50 cubic feet per minute per square foot, no air re-circulation and maintaining a negative pressure of at least 7 PA (0.03 inches of water gauge).
      • Provide drains plumbed for appropriate disposal of liquid waste in spaces where water and chemical concentrate mixing occurs.

      Design to minimize cross-contamination of regularly occupied occupancy areas by chemical pollutants: Employ permanent entry way systems (grills, grates, etc.) to capture dirt, particulates, etc. from entering the building at all high volume entry ways, AND provide areas with structural deck to deck partitions with separate outside exhausting, no air recirculation and negative pressure where chemical use occurs (including housekeeping areas and copying/print rooms), AND provide drains plumbed for appropriate disposal of liquid waste in spaces where water and chemical concentrate mixing occurs.

Roll-out mats are acceptable only when maintained on a weekly basis by a contracted service organization.
      • Sufficiently exhaust each space where hazardous gases or chemicals may be present or used (e.g., garages, housekeeping and laundry areas, copying and printing rooms) to create negative pressure with respect to adjacent spaces when the doors to the room are closed. For each of these spaces, provide self- closing doors and deck-to-deck partitions or a hard-lid ceiling. The exhaust rate must be at least 0.50 cubic feet per minute (cfm) per square foot (0.15 cubic meters per minute per square meter) with no air recirculation. The pressure differential with the surrounding spaces must be at least 5 Pascals (Pa) (0.02 inches of water gauge) on average and 1 Pa (0.004 inches of water) at a minimum when the doors to the rooms are closed.
      • Provide containment (i.e. a closed container for storage for off-site disposal in a regulatory compliant storage area, preferably outside the building) for appropriate disposal of hazardous liquid wastes in places where water and chemical concentrate mixing occurs (e.g., housekeeping, janitorial and science laboratories).
      • In mechanically ventilated buildings, install new air filtration media in regularly occupied areas prior to occupancy; these filters must provide a minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) of 13 or higher. Filtration should be applied to process both return and outside air that is delivered as supply air. (OR) Equivalent filtration media with a minimum duct spot efficiency of 80% or higher and greater than 98% arrestance on a particle size of 3–10 µg.
