Common issue: Trouble following the Background Noise methodology outlined in 2007 ASHRAE HVAC Handbook Chp 47 pgs 47.26-47.30 Indoor Sound Criteria.
Suggestions: Utilize Path 2 to comply with Background Noise, which is a narrative option outlined in ANSI S12.60-2002 Annex B.
Common issue: For Reverberation Time calculations, proprietary spreadsheets are convenient, but often do not seem to allow input for surfaces other than those covered with the acoustic products.
Suggestions: If the core learning/classroom space is less than 10,000 cubic feet, utilize the much simpler Case 1: Path 1 (Minimum NRC). Alternatively, when pursuing Case 1: Path 2, or Case 2: Path 1, utilize the calculation table within the LEED form (which is based on the calculation methodology outlined in ANSI S12.60-02 Annex C) instead of the proprietary spreadsheet, and ensure that all six surfaces (four walls, floor, and ceiling) are entered in the form. This may produce a more accurate and lower reverberation time.
We welcome and value the opinions of our green building community. We are collecting feedback on LEED v4 during the 5th open commenting period. At this time, each USGBC site user may comment on the open credits.
