There are many drivers for the use of renewable energy, such as codes, climate, government expectations etc,. This presentation will look briefly at the past, present and future of renewable energy sources and how renewable energy can be used in the design of a LEED v4 certified building. Three LEED credits will be reviewed, Optimizing Energy Performance, Renewable Energy Production and Carbon Offsets as they apply to renewable energy. Two case studies (one university library and one community college technical training facility) will be presented. Each will be evaluated on the available LEED v4 points, related to optimized energy performance, renewable energy production and carbon offsets

Objectives

  1. Explain the Optimize Energy Performance Credit in the LEED v4 BD +C rating system and USGBC’s stance on geothermal heat pump systems.
  2. Explain the Renewable Energy Production Credit in the LEED v4 BD +C rating system and what energy sources are applicable to building design.
  3. Explain the Green Power & Carbon Offsets Credit in the LEED v4 BD +C rating system and how that applies to a central heat plant for a facility.
  4. Understand drivers for renewable energy sources and low carbon systems, as well as updated costs and paybacks
