This course will provide an overview and discussion of Living Building Challenge (LBC) certification. This includes a description of the goals and values of the LBC to create buildings that are self-sufficient and remain within the resource limits of their site; that create a positive impact on the human and natural systems that interact with them; and that are healthy and beautiful.
Presenters Kim Shinn with TLC Engineering and Paul Marshall with Vanderbilt University will provide an introductory to intermediate level overview of the Living Building Challenge and other Living Future programs.

Objectives

  1. Course participants will learn the different LBC project Typologies and applicable Imperatives, with particular emphasis on the latest version of the Challenge, v3.1.
  2. Course participants will understand the performance-based certification process, and the different forms of certification, including Petal, Net Zero Energy, and full LBC.
  3. Course participants will be exposed to application of various strategies to achieve different Imperatives through examination of case studies.
  4. Course participants will be introduced to companion Living Future programs, such as local Collaboratives; the JUST, DECLARE and REVEAL labels; and the Living Product and Living Community Challenges.
