Material transparency in the chemical industry is a hot topic as chemical disclosure lists are becoming more prominent in the building industry. This course provides a general overview on the topic of red lists, health product declarations, and environmental product declarations. It reviews some updated information about what industry groups and environmental agencies are discussing in Washington and discusses how transparency effects the construction industry. We will open the discussion for the balance of a science-based analysis and transparency and how it effects the goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing energy efficiency and providing safety and durability in the built environment. 

Objectives

  1. Understand the primary schools of thought in the transparency discussion and their primary goals and concerns.
  2. Become familiar with the key terminology including learning the difference between health product declarations(HPDs) and environmental product declarations(EPDs).
  3. Learn the timeline that evolved into pathway options to comply with LEED v4
  4. Become familiar with key industry players and their role in the transparency discussion.
