As envelopes are pushed further and further to meet sustainable objectives, the need to properly commission the envelope becomes paramount. This course considers the pros and cons of commissioning the building envelope, including identifying the benefits and concerns, costs, and relationship to building codes.
A building may have cutting edge technologies to create energy, water and IEQ efficiency, but it has become apparent that optimal results also require a sustainable building envelope. Once viewed primarily as a barrier between the interior and exterior, the building envelope has assumed an integral role in building energy efficiency. The high performance building envelope focuses on the integration of edifice materials and elements and on the interaction between the exterior and interior environments. Just like the interior environment, designers and construction professionals will consider how the building skin can positively impact the life cycle performance of the whole building.
Since LEED v4 emphasizes building life cycle performance, it is possible to achieve credits through the envelope to earn a Silver rating. This course considers the pros and cons of commissioning the building envelope, including identifying the benefits and concerns, costs, and relationship to building codes.
