In this course, the participant will discover how to address social equity within the community as it applies to the LEED Social Equity Pilot Credits. We will cover ways to think about social equity, the goals and focuses of the pilot credit, and the specific criteria and documentation required for the credit.

The goal of the Social Equity in the Community Credit is to help projects address disparities in access and social inequities within a project’s own community. In order to go beyond charity to support meaningful transformation, building teams must begin to understand the various parts of their communities and understand how they are connected, and community members (particularly those who are vulnerable, disadvantaged and under-represented) must have a greater voice in decisions that impact them.

The intended audience for this course includes architects, engineers, contractors, owners, and other design professionals who want to to promote and further social equity by integrating strategies that address identified social and community needs. Course participants will learn how to achieve the Social Equity within the Community Pilot Credit for the LEED v4 BD+C rating systems. In addition, participants will learn how to utilize the SEED Evaluator tool.

  1. Identify the intent and requirements of LEED BD+C pilot credit: Social Equity Within the Community
  2. Describe the SEED program, and understand how to effectively use this resource to achieve the LEED pilot credit
  3. Identify community needs connected to social equity and how they relate to the LEED pilot credit
  4. Examine strategies that improve social equity for communities in relation to a LEED project

I am glad to see LEED is recognizing the importance of social equity in the green building industry. Learning about the SEED network was beneficial. This video relies too heavily on generic stock video clips that are often distracting and feel inauthentic.

Great overview of the credit and implementation. I really wish that a version of this this pilot credit were available for LEED O+M. It seems like there is so much that could be done at any time after construction to reach out to the community, participate in local NGOs, and programs for employees, just to name a few aspects. Renewing that type of commitment every 5 years could be a powerful force for good in a community.

Good discussions and explanations of the concepts. But the slides or graphics are clipped, and you cannot see the ends of some of the slides.
I understand if this was for emphasis of one sentence of a form, but when you are discussing the entire form, I suggest the entire form or page be shown clearly on the screen.
Otherwise, great presentation!

This course addresses a pilot credit under a different perspective, since in it develops the concept of social equity within the community. The presentation explores how the project can enhance the life of the community, not only the surrounding one, but also the functional community (e.g. visitors and service providers). Through a detailed, yet engaging fashion, the course goes through the credit´s concepts and requirements and provides a few examples of how can this be implemented. It properly develops the credit’s content, as well as explaining what is required at each option.

What I enjoyed most about the course is the fact that it gives project teams the opportunity to reflect on the social implications of our designs, and how it can positively affect the lives of many people. It provides effective assessment tools that move from concept to implementation. The course includes a wide array of learning tools: live interviews, built-in quizzes, videos and slides, all very well balanced.

After completing this short course, the learner will be able to understand and evaluate actions and design-related decisions that can enhance the social value of the projects. Therefore, the target audience for this course encompasses developers, architects, designers, consultants and professionals interested in exploring the social benefits of a project.

This is a course which achieves what it set out to do, which is to educate the viewer about the Social Equity Within the Community pilot credit. That being said, I found myself wanting more from the course. Social equity is a cause that I care deeply about (and I'd imagine that many people within the USGBC community feel the same way), but I didn't find myself inspired by the course as much as I had hoped I would be. I think that including a case study (even for just 5-10 minutes of this half hour course) would have been so beneficial in helping the viewer to connect more with the course on an emotional level (which in my opinion, is often the best way to help people to empathize more with those who are most marginalized in our society). I almost rated the course three stars since I felt like the course could have provided a more powerful call to action, but then I settled on four stars because I realized that I was probably expecting too much of a course which is more pragmatic in its intent. I completed the course feeling like I better understood the pilot credit and how to go about implementing the credit requirements, and the course was definitely well-prepared and well-presented, so I would say that this is a great course overall.

For me, the best part of this course were the brief interview segments with Judith Mowry, who is a Senior Policy Advisor with the City of Portland's Office of Equity and Human Rights. I would have loved to have seen more interview segments from other professionals (perhaps from both the public and private sectors) who work with socially responsible design, development, and advocacy. I also appreciated that stock video clips were used in lieu of stock imagery - this helps to give the course a feeling of movement which felt more engaging. Besides my wish for the case study presentation(s) of socially responsible development, my primary critique of the course would be that it moves a bit too slow for my taste. I would have liked to have seen the course's current content condensed into 20-25 minutes with perhaps even 35-40 minutes of case study presentations and more interview segments. I was glad to hear an update on the SEED Network, which I haven't kept up with over the last few years.

Overall, this is a very good course, and it meets its course objectives well. The course leaders clearly put a lot of work into the course, and it flows smoothly. I'd recommend this course to anyone involved with (or interested in) development which is socially responsible and which engages the community which it will serve and affect.
