Walking the Talk: Using LEEDv4 to Energize a Community

With its new Utilities Administration Building (UAB), the City of Fort Collins, Colorado, set out to walk its talk by exemplifying how one building can drive ambitious community climate goals. The project team designed UAB to support the City’s bold Climate Action Plan (CAP, which targets carbon neutrality by 2050), provide district-scale net positive energy and support healthy, productive occupants. This 37,500 sq ft project was the first city building (and fourth building of any type) in the world to achieve LEED v4 Platinum certification. After falling short of high-performance goals on recent construction projects, the City decided to leverage LEED by getting specific about which credits to pursue—in this case, all LEED v4 energy credits. In addition to CAP and long-term zero energy goals, the City was further motivated to model leadership in this building because it houses the City’s utilities and sustainability administrative offices. Join the owner, architect, engineer and LEED consultant to hear how owner involvement and a strong integrative process leveraged synergies between client-, occupant-, building- and district-scale goals, energizing the team to secure all LEED v4 energy credits. Discuss how you can apply these strategies on your own projects.
