Mr. Cole Walker, the CEO of Energy Surety Partners, will give a presentation titled, “Microgrids: What Are They and Why Should I Care?”
What are microgrids?
Microgrids are a form of distributed energy resources (DERs) that generate and store electricity from many small energy sources and island from the larger grid when needed. They are decentralized, modular and comprised of flexible technologies located close to the load they serve, having capacities generally smaller than large scale centralized plants. These systems typically use energy storage and energy sources including, but not limited to: solar, wind, biomass, biogas, geothermal power and waste.
Why should I care?
Most countries generate electricity in large centralized facilities, such as fossil fuel (coal and gas), nuclear, large solar power plants and hydropower plants. These plants have excellent economies of scale, but usually transmit electricity long distances, are subject to many points of failure, and can negatively affect the environment. Microgrids are located near their points of use and can provide energy surety for business continuity, reduce environmental impact and save business money on energy.
