As green building codes and mandates progress in the DC metro region, “net-zero” construction and renovation are likely to be at the forefront of changes designed to meet ambitious goals. In the District, for example, the city has set 2026 as the date when all new construction and major retrofits will have to realize net-zero energy, with certain segments of the industry adopting net-zero building codes by 2020 and 2022. Other municipalities and governments have adopted their own “net-zero” targets and mandates - Montgomery County, MD declared its ambitious intention to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions by 2035.

Now that actual buildings are in operation, we can engage owners and project teams from the United Therapeutics Unisphere and the American Geophysical Union projects who have taken the lead in demonstrating how “net-zero” is viable today. Learn from the engineers, architects and owners involved in these projects as they discuss the decision making process to choose “net-zero,” the technologies and techniques involved and the challenges they faced in the process. Explore the differences between a net zero new construction project and a net zero retrofit. Review the latest in net zero certification programs. Hear from government officials about the ambitious goals driving market transformation and the new and upcoming policies to support them.
