LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, always has addressed the building's impact on basic indoor environmental quality concerns. But with increasing interest to promote healthy work environments and lifestyles, many employers also are adopting wellness programs — and seeing significant ROI on their investment.

The programs address social, mental and physical health through corporate policies, employee assistance programs, exercise and biometric screening, healthier food options and education. The result: Improvements to employee productivity and retention, and reduced healthcare costs.

The WELL Building Standard (a new rating system from IWBI) provides a structure for evaluating wellness strategies for building design and operational elements, built from a collection of research findings that support the benefits to health and well-being.

Peter K. Dahl and Ariane Laxo will show how recent research in this area supports the business case for this intense focus on health, identify similarities and overlapping strategies between LEED and WELL, and critical differences between the two rating systems.

Objectives:

  • Understand the philosophical differences between LEED and WELL

  • Compare & contrast the LEED prereqs and credits with WELL preconditions and optimizations

  • Describe the benefits of improved indoor environmental quality on employee productivity, retention and health

  • Compare the WELL performance verification with LEED building performance documentation & LEED review process
