With the implementation of LEEDv4 and now LEEDv4.1, the is an increased emphasis on transparency data collection for material selections – knowing material ingredients, life-cycle impacts and other attributes that may impact specification choices. Navigating the array of multi-attribute product certifications can be a daunting task. Some teams even elect not to pursue the Building Product Disclosure and Optimization - Environmental Product Declarations and Materials Ingredients credits, and Low-Emitting Materials Credits based on the perceived amount of time it may take to research and evaluate products. Others, provide generic language or requirements without back-checking their specifications and then leave it up to the general contractor to figure out.

Utilizing the Materials Action Plan method, first identifies the hierarchy of products to consider for a particular project type, then aligns team members via a project goal discussion, that evolves into a clear plan for how the LEED credits can be achieved. Case study projects that have achieved the LEEDv4.1 Building Product Disclosure and Optimization - Environmental Product Declarations and Materials Ingredients credits will be shared to provide lessons learned.
