The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) Headquarters is one of the first buildings in the nation with onsite treatment and reuse of gray and black water.

Located in one of the densest neighborhoods in the US, the ecological treatment system is visible — it is located in the atrium and sidewalks where thousands of people walk every day. The "Living Machine" treats and reclaims the building's wastewater to satisfy 100 percent of the water demand for the building's low-flow toilets and urinals, reducing water use by 60 percent.

The blueprint provided by the SFPUC's system is practical and visionary — allowing and incentivizing the installation of decentralized wastewater reuse systems to provide sustainable, resilient urban water and wastewater systems.
