Join the Cape Fear Branch of USGBC North Carolina for a green roof tour of the New Hanover County Building at 320 Chestnut Street. With some expertise from Riverbend Nursery, the building has a year-round green roof that will reduce the urban heat island effect, reduce storm water runoff, recreate natural habitats for small birds and butterflies, and improve workplace morale through aesthetics and improved livability.

Given the site's proximity to the coast, mitigation of wind uplift was a priority for the design and construction team. Therefore, the LiveRoof system's patent-pending WindDisc system was selected for the project. Riverbend Nursery custom grew the LiveRoof modules within 300 miles of the building site, using plants tested and proven for performance in the local climate.

The tour will start at 5 p.m. and is being provided by Scott Spike with Sawyer, Sherwood & Associates (designer). It will be followed by Green Drinks from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Fly Trap Brewery.
