Governor takes action to boost energy efficiency in Virginia

Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe arrived yesterday morning at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in Richmond, VA, to make a major announcement on energy efficiency. (Yes, you read that correctly; we were at the DMV).   This particular DMV, through an innovative collaboration with Trane, had recently undergone an extensive energy retrofit that was now saving 36 percent in energy use and saving a whopping $284,000 a year. That was something that the Governor was eager to see and...

Alternative Compliance Paths continue to localize LEED

LEED is the only globally consistent green building rating tool. This consistency provides a platform to share best practice in building around the world. But because environmental and climate conditions, codes, standards and laws vary in different places, we have developed Alternative Compliance Paths (ACPs) to recognize those differences while achieving the same credit intent and requirements. These credit options are available for commercial projects pursuing LEED 2009...

The LEED Dynamic Plaque proves that design makes the difference

Design is defined as “an intentional purposeful plan.” To me, that always has meant that the quality of the design has to do with the dimensions that it addresses. The better the design, the greater the dimensions. Good design is beautiful and functional but also responsible and natural. Great design is transformational. USGBC’s passion for design is evident in the LEED Dynamic Plaque. That’s why we were overjoyed to be one of 51 design entries, along with IDEO, selected...

Celebrating the impact of our LEED Fellows and one another

Every year, Greenbuild brings our community together and it provides a unique opportunity to reflect on each of the ways we all have an impact on the future of green building.  I have recently been privileged to witness this tremendous impact as I have reviewed the 2014 LEED Fellow nominee application packages—and the evidence of this influence is overwhelming. This year, two GBCI staff members, Theresa Hogerheide and Gail Hampsmire, were named LEED Fellows, joining fellow staff...

If it's happening, it's possible

This article is the introduction of the 2014 September-October Issue of USGBC+ written by Paul Hawken, environmentalist, entrepreneur, and author. There is widespread belief that climate initiatives are either top-down or bottom up, when they in fact exist everywhere and in all areas of human endeavor. A meaningful global climate treaty and carbon pricing are needed but unlikely at the moment. Aside from political leadership, a growing movement within society addresses climate change and...

DOE affirms federal leadership in sustainability and continued use of LEED

For over a decade, federal agencies have successfully used third-party green building rating systems, like LEED, to deliver exceptional building projects that address the myriad federal requirements, reduce energy and other resources and save taxpayer money. It’s a testament to the green building leadership we see in the federal sector. Consistent with that record of leadership, last week the Department of Energy (DOE) issued its final rule on federal agencies’ use of...

New LEED BD+C 2009 ACPs released for Europe

In February 2014, USGBC contacted Sweden Green Building Council (SGBC) and other European members of the LEED International Roundtable to introduce a work project to create Europe-specific Alternative Compliance Paths (ACPs) for LEED BD+C 2009. This was something that SGBC could really get behind: At that time, we had over 50 ongoing projects using LEED BD+C 2009. This presented a significant opportunity to define guidance that could smooth the path to certification over the coming years....
