New Buildings Institute is dedicated to the cultivation of a resilient, sustainable society through dramatic improvements in building energy performance. Our mission is to verify, promote and accelerate adoption of next practices for improving energy performance throughout the built environment. We're brass tacks environmentalists: our work is understated, focused and deeply pragmatic. We seek deep and lasting changes in humanity’s relationship with the resources that sustain us by redefining energy consumption in the built environment. We pursue our goals through an integrated program of empirical research on advanced strategies for energy conservation and zero-net energy (ZNE) building operations.

NBI works with international, national, regional, state and utility groups to promote improved energy performance in commercial buildings. NBI works with design professionals, program administrators and policy makers to develop and communicate effective strategies for saving energy in the built environment. These characteristics give NBI the ability to effectively address market, policy and technical issues across a broad spectrum of building performance topics. NBI’s Board of Directors represents a cross-section of the energy efficiency and green building fields. The most unique aspect of NBI is its reputation as the “What’s Next” development group for commercial building energy efficiency.
We work collaboratively with commercial building market players to remove barriers to energy efficiency, promoting advanced design practices, improved technologies, public policies and programs that improve energy efficiency. We develop and offer guidance on designing and constructing energy‐efficient buildings through our Advanced Buildings® suite of tools and resources. Our current efforts are working to provide the policy and program direction and promote design practices and technologies that will result in buildings that are better for people and the environment. Our work on new construction, codes, advanced lighting, HVAC and measured performance has dramatically impacted the market.
