Alex is the founder and past president of BuildingGreen, based in Brattleboro, Vermont. He is also president of the Resilient Design Institute, a nonprofit organization launched in early 2012. He is a widely published writer and author or coauthor of several books relating to green building. He serves as an instructor at Boston Architectural College in the Sustainable Design Institute.

Alex served on the national board of the U.S. Green Building Council from 2000 through 2005. He also served for nine years as a trustee of the Vermont Chapter of The Nature Conservancy and currently serves on the board of Landmark Trust USA.

In 2008 Alex received the USGBC Leadership Award for Education, and in 2010 he was the second recipient of the Hanley Award for Vision and Leadership in Sustainable Housing.
