On the forefront of sustainability, reimagining the physical environment and its impact on human and global wellbeing, Anthony Bernheim, FAIA, LEED Fellow, is a visionary and respected leader in smart, energy efficient, high performance building. He has devoted his career to pioneering the impact of buildings on indoor air quality and human health. With a record of designing and implementing a holistic approach and process to sustainability, Mr. Bernheim, contributes to improving global and human health, comfort, and wellness in the built environment.

Tireless and passionate, with a long track record of accomplishments, a few notable projects standout; Mr. Bernheim developed the sustainability plan for the $2.4B San Francisco International Airport (SFO) Terminal 1 Redevelopment Program, moving the discussion beyond LEED® to “Deep Green” long-term integrative “Triple Bottom Line” (environmental, social, and financial responsibility) building development practices.

Another key accomplishment was his work on a seminal project that revolutionized building product manufacturing and improved air quality. Collaborating with indoor air quality experts, scientists and engineers, and with an understanding of the relationship between indoor air chemical concentrations and building occupant health, Mr. Bernheim collaborated on the development of project specifications used by architects, contractors and building product manufacturers for acceptable chemical emissions and concentrations, providing the basis for current green building code requirements.

Mr. Bernheim is currently the Sustainability Leader at the Allen Group, LLC, and the President & Co-Founder of Bernheim + Dean, Inc. Earlier he was the Director of Sustainability in Architecture at AECOM Architecture; Principal, Sustainable Design Solutions at HDR Architecture, Inc.; and COO, Principal, and Vice President at SMWM, Architecture, Planning and Interior Design.

A sought after consultant, speaker, author and advisor, Mr. Bernheim has a history of public service, having served as a member of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) Board of Directors in diverse capacities and on key committees since 2003. He serves currently on the Market Advisory Board for USBGC Northern California. Other memberships include service on the Board of Directors of the Health Product Declaration Collaborative (2012-2015). Mr. Bernheim has an extensive list of numerous peer reviewed technical papers, articles, book chapters, keynote addresses, and presentations.

His efforts to improve global health, the environment and human welfare are part of his deep-seated belief and moral value system. His passion and commitment have been recognized with numerous awards including: the AIA California Council's 2004 Nathaniel A. Owings Award “in recognition of a lifetime of service, commitment, and advocacy for the principles of sustainable design and preserving the earth’s natural resources,” the 2009 USGBC Northern California Chapter David Gottfried Special Achievement Award for being “an individual whose career and contributions to the industry demonstrate exceptional passion, leadership, and commitment to green building, USGBC, and the Northern California Chapter,” and the 2012 Breathe California Clean Air Award in recognition for his work on green buildings.
