Brian Dunbar is director of the Institute for the Built Environment (IBE) and
professor emeritus at Colorado State University. Brian holds two degrees in architecture from the University of Michigan and is a LEED AP. Professor Dunbar created the graduate emphasis in sustainable building at Colorado State and has directed and taught university and professional courses on sustainable building, including courses in Costa Rica and on St. John, USVI.
Through IBE, an interdisciplinary research institute that engages faculty,
students and industry partners in healthy and sustainable building issues,
Brian has guided project work for the National Park Service, U.S. Forest
Service, cities, school districts, and the Colorado Energy Office.
Brian has helped to direct several LEED certified projects and, since
2004, has annually been selected as a LEED faculty member by the USGBC.
Brian is co-author of “147 Tips on Teaching Sustainability” and his
sustainable building teaching and research has been honored and recognized by the AIA,
USGBC, the Colorado Governor, the Alliance for Sustainable Colorado,
communities, businesses and universities. In 2012, Brian was designated as a

sustainability” and LENSES, a framework created to help project teams and
communities reach beyond sustainable developments. Brian sits on university
and civic committees focused on sustainability and green building, including
the School of Global Environmental Sustainability Executive Council and the
CSU President's Sustainability Committee.
Brian is a USGBC Faculty member. USGBC Faculty are the official instructors
of USGBC's instructor-led workshops working with USGBC's education delivery
