Cassandra’s interest in eco tourism evolved after attending her first year at Long Island University in Costa Rica. Traveling into the rain forest, visiting indigenous cultures and studying socio-economic and political affairs at the University peaked her interest on how to combine the experience of exquisite natural environments while benefiting the local communities.
She furthered her ecological knowledge at Green Mountain College in Vermont and also studied tourism. At the age of 19 she decided to “plunge” into the world of Eco Tourism by physically travelling to and working at various hotels around the world. Within three years Cassandra had traveled alone to 22 countries and 5 continents, working at eco hotels and experiencing local cultures.
Valuable knowledge was gained by Cassandra through working at eco hotels around the world such as the Bayrams Tree Houses in Turkey and Playa Viva in Mexico where she spent four months helping to manage the luxury boutique hotel. She learned how to increase guest satisfaction by delivering sustainable amenities, worked with the local community on projects where guests participated, developed activities that explored the local environment, enhanced social marketing through blogging and learned other valuable lessons necessary to attract customers and increase eco stature of the hotel.
She then worked in Peru where at Inkaterra at Machu Picchu she delivered a presentation on how to increase profitability through enhanced sustainability. In Ecuador she worked at the Kapawi EcoLodge & Reserve in the Amazon, entirely owned by the native Achuars. She worked to enhance sustainability efforts, marketing and guest relations.
Cassandra is now completing her certification for LEED Accredited Professional and Sustainability. She is compiling a team of professionals who are expert in the various components of sustainability to draw on with her consulting business. Cassandra is continuing to learn and develop relationships to put her on the cutting edge of eco tourism so she can advise luxury boutique hotels how to capitalize on this growing segment of the hospitality industry.
