Jonathan Burgess is Vice President of Sustainable Operations for The
Spinnaker Group, a premier green-building consulting firm based in South
Florida. His firm has helped inform the design of over 100 Leadership in
Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified building projects, and is
currently involved in more than 200 LEED projects pursuing certification. The
firm has also provided Commissioning Services for over 1/2 billion sq. ft. of
Jonathan is also a licensed Landscape Architect and Principal at Paradelo
Burgess Design Studio, with over a decade of experience in site design, land
planning and project management for major public and private developments
covering practically all land use types. At PB Design, Jonathan's focus is on
creating restorative landscapes that heal both the individual and planet.
Jonathan advocates for the use of the SITES rating system and plans to seek
that credential once it becomes available in 2016.
In addition to his practitioner role, Jonathan also serves as both WELL
Faculty and USGBC Faculty. He has been a featured subject matter expert,
blogger, guest lecturer, and is an Adjunct Professor at the University of
Miami’s prestigious School of Architecture.
Due to his passion for green building, he has spent over 10 years
volunteering for the US Green Building Council. During his tenure of service
with the USGBC, Jonathan has worn many hats: In South Florida, he has been a
former Chapter Board member and Executive Committee member, Chair (&
Vice-Chair) of the Palm Beach Branch, a Branch Committee chair and member on
multiple committees. At the Regional level, he has served as the Regional
Committee Chair, Vice-Chair, and Chapter Rep, as well as the Region’s rep
to the Chapter Steering Committee. At the National level, he has served on
the Inter-Regional Communications Working Group, the LEED Location & Planning
Technical Advisory Group, the Chapter Steering Committee, and the Global
Community Engagement Collaborative Advisory Group. In return, the USGBC has
helped Jonathan shape his career path and skill set as a leader. He even met
his wife Lindsay through the USGBC!
Outside of his volunteer work with the USGBC, Jonathan also works towards a
sustainable future in several different capacities. He is both a co-Founder
and co-Facilitator of the Living Building Challenge: Florida Collaborative;
and has been an Advisor to EcoArts South Florida. In the public realm, he has
been an Advisor for the City of Miami Parks Advisory Board and is the former
Chair of the West Palm Beach Sustainability Advisory Committee.
Jonathan is also Co-Founder of the Green Veterans Group, a program dedicated
to helping our nation's heroes learn about sustainable building and green
living, while at the same time helping ease the hardship of
For his continued work in the community, Jonathan has received the Green
Leader Award from the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce, the Community LEEDer
Award from the US Green Building Council South Florida Chapter, and
back-to-back U.S. President’s Volunteer Service Awards by The White House
for his work on with the USGBC.
