Michelle Halle Stern is the national Director of Sustainable Design Services at HDR where she manages business operations and strategic planning for their sustainable design consulting group.
Prior to joining HDR, Michelle was a Sustainability Strategist at Perkins+Will, director of green building initiatives and LEED consulting for the non-profit Delta Institute, and the first Director of Sustainability at OWP/P.
I have been sought after as a green building expert since the late 90s, when
I started one of the country’s first sustainability programs, and founded
the USGBC Chicago Chapter. My background in architecture, engineering,
and Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, which offers me a unique
perspective and understanding of complex systems, and the human health
impacts of green design.
In 2013 I started The Green Facilitator,a sustainability consulting firm,
and I am also a partner in the professional development firm, Prairie Lab.
Prior to starting these ventures, I spent most of my career as the director
of sustainability for large architecture/engineering firms.
In 2011 the Green Building Certification Institute named me to the inaugural
class of LEED Fellows, reflecting my longstanding contributions to green
design. I received the first USGBC Illlinois Chapter Leader Award, and
continue to volunteer at USGBC as the Chair of Indoor Environmental Quality
Technical Advisory Group, and I also serve as a LEEDuser Expert for several

in scope from small furniture showrooms to 1 million s.f. hospitals. In
