Nathan Gauthier

Nathan Gauthier is Director of FM Integration & Sustainability with Shawmut
Design and Construction. Mr. Gauthier is also an instructor at Harvard
Extension School where he teaches graduate courses on green buildings and
sustainability. He is a LEED Fellow and has been Chair of the Energy and
Atmosphere Technical Advisory Group, a member of the U.S. Green Building
Council’s national Board of Directors, a founding member of the Massachusetts USGBC BOD, a member of the Professional Development Committee, and has volunteered for the USGBC in many other capacities. He recently returned to the U.S. after a few years in Rwanda working as construction manager for UNICEF building early childhood development centers in rural areas and refugee camps.

Nathan was previously the energy manager with JLL for Philips Electronics
North and South America, a portfolio with more than $25 million in annual
energy costs. In this role Nathan conducted energy audits to identify savings
opportunities, managed LEED certifications and efficiency projects, and
trained facilities staff on sustainability building
operations. Prior to this, Mr. Gauthier managed the Green Building Service
program at Harvard University as Assistant Director of the Office for
Sustainability. OFS included a team of 25 sustainability professionals with
an annual operating budget of more than $2 million. Nathan also chaired the
$12 million revolving loan fund and the University’s Green Building
Standards committee, where he worked with the schools to develop a standards
for projects to utilize an integrated design process, conduct life cycle
costing of potential design alternatives, improve the project closeout
process, and achieve at least a LEED Gold certification and significant
energy reductions. He has worked for the South Carolina Sustainable
Universities Initiative teaching, developing sustainability courses, and
implementing Environmental Management Systems, and for Energy Conscious
Builders, his family’s environmentally friendly construction company.
Nathan was also a partner with EA Buildings, a sustainable design consulting
firm with offices in Chile, Columbia, Mexico and Boston.

Mr. Gauthier has provided sustainability consulting services for more than
100 LEED projects on four continents, more than a dozen of which have
achieved LEED platinum status. He is a Technical Advisor for Energy for the
AASHE STARS rating system and is regularly asked to speak on the value
proposition of green buildings.

Nathan is a licensed Residential Builder (MI), Certified Energy Manager,
Certified Facilities Manager, Construction Document Technologist, Ground
Source Heat Pump Installer, Qualified Commissioning Process Provider,
Existing Building Commissioning Professional, Green Advantage Professional,
LEED Accredited Professional (BD+C and ID+C), Certified Energy Auditor, and
trained in use of the NCI Charrette System. Nathan was a member of the
Massachusetts Zero Net Energy Working Group and the Department of Energy’s
Higher Education Energy Alliance steering committee and is now part of the
fledgling Rwandan green building council.
