LEED BD+C: New Construction v3 - LEED 2009
California Democratic Party Headquarters
LEED Gold 2015
The John L. Burton Democratic Headquarters is the nation’s only political office to receive Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. When former U.S. Congressman and California legislative leader John Burton was elected Chairman of the California Democratic Party in 2009, he promised to build a more collaborative, financially sustainable, and innovative organization.
The John L. Burton Democratic Headquarters embodies California Democrats’ vision of environmental sustainability, equality and justice for all. Built with union labor, the two-story, 10,000 square foot headquarters is a LEED-certified, fully ADA accessible, permanent building housing 19 full time employees. It includes rooms for volunteer predictive dialer phone banks and trainings, as well as an outdoor patio for fundraisers and receptions.
The green redesign of a former commercial space in the heart of Sacramento’s historic core includes rooftop solar panels that produce at least 35 percent of the building’s electricity needs, bicycle parking and charging stations for electric vehicles, carpeting made from recycled fishing net, and drought tolerant landscaping.
In its first year of operation, the John L. Burton Democratic Headquarters used less than half the amount of electricity compared to similar buildings on the West Coast, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. This green building reflects our Democratic values and contributes to California’s fight against climate change.
Productivity-enhancing design includes collaboration rooms for meetings, shared bicycles for riding to the State Capitol, and an open kitchen to encourage staff sociability and office harmony. The John L. Burton Democratic Headquarters opened on June 16, 2014, and received LEED Gold certification on March 9, 2015, thanks to the support and vision of environmentalists Tom Steyer and Kat Taylor.
