The HAEF Preschool & Kindergarten was certified LEED Platinum in October 2014, thus becoming the first LEED Platinum building in Greece. Accordingly, this project has become a showcase of exemplary performance in sustainable design and construction. Using the LEED Rating System to guide the process from start to finish, the project team employed a variety of strategies to reduce energy and water use, create a healthy indoor environment, rationalize resource demand, and implement innovative strategies.

Unlike any other builong in the country, The HAEF Preschool and Kindergarten is a state of the art pre-school and kindergarten. It is a 36,597 sq. ft. two-story building with a fish-like shape that spans multiple tiers. Areas accessible to children are interconnected as a single level with sloped corridors for the children’s safety. The design ensures that day lighting and natural ventilation is provided through fenestration. Furthermore, the seven small atriums of the building, contribute to the same goal. The building includes teaching areas, kitchen and dining, multipurpose assembly areas, office and library areas. Underneath the building, there is a two-level car park area and all MEP spaces.

The Hellenic-American Educational Foundation decided to build the new educational building within the existing campus, targeting maximum energy efficiency. The proximity of the new building to existing facilities provides the new project with opportunities of interactive relationships with the other existing organizations of the campus as well as existing community facilities outside the campus.

Notably, the exposed roof area is covered with a green roof in an effort to provide a seamless integration of the new building to the existing environment and thus enhance local biodiversity. Taking this into consideration, rainwater harvesting was introduced as a sustainable solution to reduce potable water demand not only for irrigation of the extensive landscape areas but also for toilet flushing.

Creating high quality indoor spaces was top priority. Thanks to the unique project design there is sufficient daylight penetration in all regularly occupied areas, which not only significantly reduces lighting loads but also creates a high-quality indoor environment for the school.

While the integrative nature of the LEED processes posed great challenges the HAEF Preschool and Kindergarten stands out as a shinning case study of sustainable building. It provides many lessons to the entire campus student body and the building is used as an ongoing teaching tool.
