LEED Gold 2012

The Franciscan Prairiewoods Spirituality Center in Hiawatha, Iowa became only the second building and the only non-profit organization in Iowa to achieve LEED EB+OM Gold Certification in November of 2012.

The Franciscan Prairiewoods Spirituality Center in Hiawatha, Iowa earned LEED EB+OM Gold Certification in November of 2012. It became only the second building in Iowa to achieve this and the only non-profit organization to do so. The center was established in 1996 and is run by the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration. Since opening, the sisters have created a retreat for people of all denominations to be a part of serenity and nature. Their aim is the repairing the mind, body and spirit. The Spirituality Center is located on 70 acres of land connected by many walking trails and benches. It is has a central building which houses offices and meeting spaces, as well as a guest house and a garage/ maintenance facility.

The Franciscan Sisters have always been ecologically friendly and are committed to preserving the environment. They established programs to recycle, grew a lot of their own food, and educated the community on environmental protection. The Center was aware of LEED for several years, but did not feel it was within reach until the Center’s Marketing Director met Bruce Hamous of OPN Architects. Bruce presented to the Center’s Board of Directors about LEED.

They were immediately committed to work towards certification. Bruce, an engineer and two other Board members began assessing the strategies that would get Prairiewoods Certified. The process took over three years because the volunteer project team was new to the LEED EB+OM. Prairiewoods attained 54 LEED credits. Energy efficiency, sustainable purchasing, and indoor environmental quality strategies contributed significantly to these credits.
