The Stitt Energy Systems Inc. (SESI) Addition and Renovation is the first project to earn LEED Platinum Certification in Northwest Arkansas. Located in Rogers, AR, SESI is a design and construction company dedicated to sustainable practices. SESI has provided leadership in energy-efficient, residential construction for 35 years. With such a long history of green building, SESI wanted to walk the talk and build green when the company needed to update its office space.

In 2008 SESI renovated its original office building that houses its design, estimating, field services, and accounting departments. By 2009, SESI had completed its renovations and addition and had achieved LEED Platinum certification. With 3,360 square feet, the building currently serves 11 employees on its main floor. SESI uses the small second story for storage space and mechanicals. Next door, an equally sustainable building houses SESI’s administration and advertising departments. The project is located on US 71 B, which was once the main north-south highway in Northwest Arkansas. The highway still sees heavy traffic; thousands of cars pass by SESI’s office on a daily basis. The site is near downtown Rogers and borders commercial and residential sections of town.

SESI worked to achieve LEED certification because they wanted outside confirmation that this project is one of the most energy efficient buildings in the country. At the top 1% of projects in the LEED for New Construction v2.2 system, SESI’s LEED score confirmed its green status and made a statement about the importance of sustainable building. Since the company has been building green for years, the LEED process provided an opportunity for the company to compete with itself to build as green as possible. Ultimately, SESI founder Orlo Stitt wanted to do the right thing and build in a way that will benefit future generations. In order to care for the environment and his employees, Orlo created a space that is aesthetically beautiful and pleasing while also functional and efficient.

SESI is proud of its achievements in water and energy efficiency. SESI processes 100% of its waste water on-site and sends nothing to the sewer. With low-flow toilets and no outdoor irrigation system, SESI has been able to minimize its water consumption to the lowest monthly base fee applicable. Additionally, the facility uses 60-70% less energy than a conventional building. SESI generates much of its own power on site with a 4.68 kilowatt photovoltaic system and is the first company to net meter in Northwest Arkansas. Due to its leadership in water efficiency and energy savings, SESI has won numerous national and state awards, including the 2013 Legacy LEED Project Award from the USGBC- Arkansas Chapter.
