January is the depth of winter for half the globe, and it can be a great time to teach topics that engage students in hands-on learning, even when going outdoors isn’t ideal. On average, we spend 90 percent of our time indoors; and the quality of the indoor air we breathe effects how we feel, think and move. Embark on an exploration of why indoor air quality (IAQ) matters, and how your class can monitor and improve it throughout the school year, with these lessons from Learning Lab.
- Grades 3–4: Boost Your IAQ, created by EcoRise and RIS. In this lesson, students participate in a sensory activity to experience how quickly a smell can travel through the air. Then, they work in teams to brainstorm ways they can use their senses to detect problems in air quality and come up with solutions to boost IAQ. Access the Spanish version.
- Grades 6–8: Urban Trees Part 1—Engage: How do trees benefit humans and the environment?, created by The Nature Conservancy. In Part 1 of the five-part module, students explore the many benefits that trees offer humans and the environment, including the role they play in urban areas to regulate air quality and surface temperatures.
- Grades 9–12: School Air Eco-Audit created by EcoRise and RIS. In this module, students take the lead on conducting an audit of the air quality in and around their school campus, while teachers support as facilitators. Working together, students monitor air quality, research how their school compares to other schools around the world in terms of air quality and identify what they can do collectively to improve air quality on campus.
