The Center for Green Schools is excited to announce that we are now accepting applications for our annual School District Fellowship Programs, which will run from September 2024 to September 2025.

Through this unique program, the Center for Green Schools offers participants of our professional sustainability and indoor air quality (IAQ) leadership networks the opportunity to work strategically in a small fellowship cohort to learn new leadership skills, access targeted support and resources to carry out specific goals, and find focused time for connecting with peers.

Each year, the two fellowship cohorts are carefully selected from a competitive application process to ensure diversity as well as commonality around specific goals for the upcoming school year.

In past years, fellows have received support to build out a dashboard to track sustainability metrics, complete an update to their sustainability action plan, launch an IAQ-monitoring network, work through the case-making and contracting process for a large energy services contract, expand a schoolyard revitalization program, and achieve a LEED Green Associate credential, just to list a few projects. Applications are open now through Friday, July 26, for the two 2024–2025 fellowship programs.

School Air Quality Fellowship

This fellowship is available to U.S.-based K–12 staff who spend at least 50% of their time on efforts related to IAQ, environmental health or both. Ideal candidates work within school districts with existing IAQ or environmental health programs that could benefit from additional guidance, training and support.

This fellowship's benefits include receiving

Support and coaching to build leadership skills and strategies, earn professional credentials and improve IAQ management.
Ongoing technical assistance and personalized training delivered by industry experts on the most critical school air quality topics for fellows.
Complimentary attendance at the 2025 Green Schools Conference and adjacent School District Sustainability and IAQ Leaders Summit (late winter, southeastern U.S.).
Funding to attend additional conferences and professional development.
Limited complimentary yearlong access to resources from USGBC, including Learning Lab, the Green Classroom Professional Certificate, Arc, USGBC education courses and LEED coaching for school building projects.

Our work to support school districts in implementing IAQ best practices is generously supported by a grant from Flu Lab.

Leaders in Sustainability Fellowship

This fellowship program is available for U.S.-based K–12 staff who spend at least 50% of their time on sustainability-related efforts and have fewer than 10 years of experience in the field. We will prioritize public school district applicants who are already involved in our School Sustainability Leaders Network, but we also welcome applicants from independent, private and charter schools who are able to demonstrate their work is impacting the system level.

This fellowship's benefits include receiving

Ongoing technical assistance and personalized training delivered by industry experts on the most critical school air quality topics for fellows.
Complimentary attendance at the 2025 Green Schools Conference and adjacent School District Sustainability and IAQ Leaders Summit (late winter, southeastern U.S.).

The 2024–2025 School Air Quality Fellowship application and Leaders in Sustainability Fellowship application are open through Friday, July 26. Keep in mind that the application requires a signed letter of support from a supervisor or school district leader.

The five fellows in each program will be announced in August, and the program will kick off virtually in September. Each fellowship will last one year from the start date.
