On Tues., March 6, the Energy Information Administration will host its 2018 Commercial Building Energy Consumption Survey (CBECS) Stakeholder Meeting.
Conducted every three to four years since 1979, CBECS is the only national source of data on the energy use of commercial buildings. The CBECS team takes a sample size—historically ranging from 5,000-8,000—of commercial buildings and conducts interviews with building professionals. The interview topics cover building size and use; ownership and occupancy; energy sources, uses and equipment; and energy consumption and cost.
The previous CBECS survey, conducted in 2012, increased the sample size by 150 percent and re-interviewed and verified a subset of buildings using energy audit techniques. The 2012 survey also was the first to ask participants about building certification, including LEED.
The March 6 webinar will provide an overview of CBECS, discuss any changes to the survey and present potential questions for the 2018 audits.
