In 2017, commercial building owners and managers across central Florida were invited to participate in the Central Florida region of USGBC Florida's Battle of the Buildings (BOTB). More than 170 buildings were registered for the battle, and during that time, 124,000 KWh of electricity was reduced by the participating facilities.
BOTB was a voluntary, fun competition to help commercial building owners and managers across Central Florida reduce energy and water consumption at their facilities. The U.S. EPA's Energy Star program was a partner in BOTB, and all participants received recognition for reducing energy, water and waste in their buildings from the EPA.
As part of the competition, the Central Florida Energy Efficiency Alliance (a committee of the Central Florida region) and the Apartment Association of Greater Orlando hosted a series of free educational webinars. Another aspect of the battle had University of Central Florida (UCF) students who had gone through UCF's energy specialist training program working with building owners to assist with benchmarking—for free!

Battle of the Buildings winners
Commercial (less than 50,000 square feet): City of Orlando, College Park Neighborhood
The City of Orlando’s College Park Community Center was able to realize a 28 percent energy reduction in the year 2017 through several energy efficiency upgrades. The building was retrofitted with LED lights, integrated into the city’s building automation system and equipped with building automation controls. A significant portion of the savings can be attributed to the retrocommissioning of the building's HVAC system.
Medical: Valencia College, Allied Health Sciences
Allied Health Sciences was certified as LEED Gold in 2009. The building was designed with white roofing material; daylight and views; horizontal shading devices; energy-efficient lights, windows and wall insulation and air conditioning system parts. The most significant energy efficiency improvement was the installation of automated control systems that allow the college to schedule the operation of lights and air conditioning systems according to hours of occupancy.
Mixed Use: Florida Hospital Central Florida Region
This is a mixed-use commercial building predominately providing for senior leadership office and meeting space. The facility has the Credo Café currently on its ground floor, direct connection to the Sun Rail stop, open access to two parking garages and direct connection to the Ginsburg and Women’s Towers.
The building features fantastic natural lighting, modular work spaces, variable air volume air conditioning, lighting controls and cooling from the campus chilled water loop. For the battle, the primary focus was on retrocommissioning the Trane building automation system and ensuring the set-point ranges were applied based on organizational standards. Next steps include further optimizing the supply air reset and static pressure reset algorithms for all floors, in addition to finalizing lighting control schedules.
Public Assembly (greater than 10,000 square feet): City of Orlando, City Hall
The City Hall realized a 20 percent reduction in energy in 2017—with only two-thirds of its renovation complete. Each renovated floor features modern LED lighting, integration into the city’s building automation system, high-efficiency hand dryers, daylight harvesting fixtures, low-flow plumbing fixtures and ergonomic collaborative spaces. High-efficiency elevators were also installed. HVAC system enhancements improve indoor air quality, promote peak load reduction and lower maintenance costs. A light-colored thermoplastic polyolefin membrane roof was installed to reduce the heat island effect.
Public Assembly (less than 10,000 square feet): Volusia County, Agriculture Center Auditorium
In 2017, Volusia County undertook upgrades to the facility that included installing a Johns Manville Two Ply SBS Modified Bitumen Roofing System, replacing the existing 50-ton chiller and nine chilled water fan coils with six rooftop units totaling 24.5 tons and using night and weekend setbacks with the new Wifi digital programmable thermostats.
