Make it your New Year's Resolution to help bring better buildings and better lives to all.

2019 has been an enormously successful year for the USGBC's local communities in the Southern region of the U.S. As of Nov. 1, we have hosted more than 270 events with over 11,600 attendees. Those numbers don’t even include Greenbuild, the world’s largest sustainable building conference and expo, which we hosted in November in Atlanta.

These events included eight award programs, which recognized and encouraged local leadership and building innovation; seven service days, including Green Apple Days of Service and Advance campaign events; over 190 educational events and tours; and our first regional conference, Greenerbuilder Austin—just to name a few.

On the project side, as of Nov. 1, 691 newly certified buildings brought over 124 million square feet of LEED-certified space. Standout projects in the Southern region this year include the first LEED Zero Energy school—Discovery Elementary in Arlington, Virginia, and the LEED Platinum Owen Residence in Little Rock, Arkansas, which was recognized with the LEED for Homes Project of the Year Award.

We are a network of communities that make things happen, and it’s important to recognize that each and every one of these successes has behind it the support of individuals and organizations committed to making a difference. The efforts of our volunteers, members, community partners, sponsors and staff that has allowed us to make such strides this year. Together, we are driving forward USGBC’s mission to bring better buildings and better lives to all.

Looking forward to 2020, we have even greater ambitions in store, but we need you to make it all happen. How can you help bring a greener tomorrow to your neighborhood? Here are just a few ways you can get involved with your local USGBC community:

  • Become a member. Membership with your local USGBC community supports green building education, advocacy, outreach and volunteer opportunities in your backyard, and demonstrates your commitment to creating a greener, healthier and more equitable future. Your membership connects you to a regional network of industry professionals and sustainability advocates and gives you access to special benefits, including free and discounted admission to green building education sessions and other local events.
  • Volunteer. Take a leadership role in shaping the future of sustainable development in your city, state or region as a USGBC volunteer. Volunteers are the hard-working heart of USGBC’s local communities. Their efforts drive forward all of our major initiatives, from education to Women in Green to Green Apple Day of Service. Whether you are looking for a long-term project or a one-day event, there’s a volunteer role in our communities waiting for you.
  • Sign on as an annual sponsor, or sponsor an event. Our work is made possible by the financial support of organizations that share our vision. Sponsorship provides the opportunity for your organization to make a tangible, positive impact, and highlights your commitment to sustainability in front of an audience of building professionals across your local market.

For information on the opportunities specific to your local USGBC community, visit your community’s website. While you are there, sign up for your community email digest, so you can stay plugged in to all the latest local green building news and events.

We’re looking forward to all we can accomplish together in 2020 and beyond!
