Philadelphia has always been a city of neighborhoods. While there are major sections of city that everyone will refer to such as West Philly or Center City—I’m a South Philly girl myself—even within those larger neighborhoods there are names that only the locals will know, like Southwark, or Fishtown.

Our Greenbuild 2013 Host Committee, which is comprised of nearly 200 volunteers, live in each of these neighborhoods. And members of our committee have put together a list of some of their favorite restaurants, shops (and yes, cheesesteak picks).

We want visitors to get a sense of the real Philadelphia, so look for “Welcome Greenbuild Nation” signs in store windows as you walk around the city, and don’t forget to visit the Delaware Valley Green Building Council’s website for recommendations. We’ll also have a social calendar posted there if you’re looking for post-session goings on where our chapter leaders will be.

If you’d like a deeper dive, our Tours Committee has put together a robust offering of local tours, which is a testament both to our amazing volunteers as well as the depth and breadth of the green building work going on in Philadelphia and beyond.

Whatever neighborhood you find yourself in, there’s likely a green building within a stone’s throw of where you stand. You can check out GBIG to see a collection of tour locations that are have LEED or Energy Star designations, or check out our website for a complete list of nearly 180 sites. Whether you want to see where the city’s waste is recycled and processed, how we light up or world-class parkway, or historic sites that have gone green, our tours program has you covered.

Since there’s limited time, and so much amazing work to see in Philadelphia, the chapter has also produced a book with Green Building & Design magazine that you’ll be able to find at the USGBC Booth at Greenbuild. Philadelphia Green is 100 full-color pages of great information on Greenbuild tour locations as well as the print version of our neighborhood guide. All tour attendees will receive a complimentary copy, but you can take one home with you too!

We like to thank our Greenbuild Host Committee for all the great work that they’ve put into making this Greenbuild great, and we’ll see you at the show.
