In the LEED Lab course, students participate in the entire LEED O+M process, choosing one building on their campus that they work toward certifying. These students facilitate the full certification timeline, taking responsibility for leading the documentation efforts and submitting the project to GBCI for review.
To prepare students for the process, the course covers both the theory and the application of the LEED rating system. Students learn about LEED’s comprehensive approach, covering the prerequisites and credits related to site considerations, energy use, water consumption, waste management and occupant comfort. They also learn how to evaluate a project’s impact on the surrounding land and ecosystem.
But where LEED Lab breaks new ground is how it brings hands-on LEED project experience into the instruction. It requires students to assess the performance of the existing campus facilities and then to select one building on which they will implement an actual LEED O+M project. Students work together as a project team, with the ultimate goal of certifying that facility. And if an on-campus project is not feasible, the group may partner with an off-campus building owner who is interested in LEED certification.
Given this combination of classroom instruction and hands-on experience, by the end of the semester, participating students are prepared to sit for the LEED AP O+M professional credential exam. Students can walk away with a highly marketable professional credential that signifies their green building experience and knowledge.
