USGBC's Vatsal Bhatt shares why he finds New York Build inspirational year after year.

As the Director of Cities and Communities for USGBC, I am inspired every time I visit New York City. The city is a leading example for the sustainable built environment.

I recently visited New York to attend and present a keynote speech at New York Build’s Sustainability Summit 2018. This gathering offered various opportunities for those interested in the cutting-edge construction and innovative design fields in the New York region and beyond.

New York’s residents and government leaders continue to demonstrate an admirable commitment to sustainable development, with ambitious emissions reduction targets, green building codes and policies that promote green affordable housing and schools. New York City has always been a leader in innovative design and construction, and its developers and designers were some of the earliest inspirations for, and adopters of, the global LEED certification program.

In earlier years, living near New York City and working on long-term analysis for its energy and water nexus, I was pleased that we first studied New York City while building the LEED for Cities program at USGBC. The city’s efforts in collecting a greenhouse gas emissions inventory, energy benchmarking, PlaNYC2030, and now, the OneNYC Plan, have been groundbreaking. These efforts are effectively changing the way growth, sustainability, resiliency and equity are managed in cities around the world.

At USGBC, we are inspired and energized by the innovation at play in New York City, as we strive to create the most efficient, healthy, equitable and sustainable buildings and communities possible.

It’s important to participate in opportunities like New York Build, not only to stay up-to-date on the latest green building trends in the city, but also to network and share ideas with some of the leading experts and minds in the industry. With each New York Build I attend, I am invigorated in my work and strive to inspire my community even more. It has become an essential part of my year.

I am greatly honored to have been given the opportunity to share USGBC’s vision for universal access to sustainability by discussing the LEED for Cities and LEED for Communities programs at the New York Build Sustainability Summit. New York continues to lead in deploying sustainable solutions, and I am eager to witness the city’s further progress in the years to come.
