This month, Wes Sullens was recognized as one of USGBC's Above and Beyond Volunteers—a volunteer leader whose contributions have led to outstanding achievements in the green building movement.

Wes currently serves as the Chair of the Materials and Resources Technical Advisory Group and is a member of the LEED Technical Committee and the Supply Chain Optimization Working Group. Wes also represents USGBC as Vice Chair of the ASHRAE Standard 189.1 Committee for High Performance Green Building and has participated in the LEED v4 beta program. The local government agency at where he works, StopWaste, in Oakland, Calif., has received Platinum certification under LEED v4 O+M. His office is the first LEED v4 Platinum certification in the world.

This year, Wes:

  • Attended eight out of 10 calls for the Supply Chain Optimization Working Group since January 6
  • Participated in optional committee calls to help resolve complex issues and developed proposals
  • Supported USGBC in the implementation of CALGreen, an alternative documentation path for LEED projects in California
  • Received the Astounding Advocate Award and the President's Volunteer Service Award for the Materials and Resources Technical Advisory Group at USGBC’s 2015 Convergence Conference

Hometown: Pleasant Hill, CA

What drew you to USGBC? The idea that buildings could be part of the solution to remedy environmental problems. And that the green building industry can make good business sense too!

What is your favorite part of volunteering with USGBC? Meeting great and inspirational people, working on world class buildings and making a positive difference.

What are you most excited about in the green building industry? Materials! I love watching the industry evolve as we find ways to reuse materials and make the greatest use of the things already in circulation.

How long have you been a part of the USGBC community? 15 years.
