At the heart of the Green Sports Alliance is the goal to leverage the power of the sports industry to create broad cultural change as it pertains to environmental stewardship, community health and sustainability. A key part of this vision is to ensure all members of the sports community are actively engaged and using their unique skills to advance the green sports movement, and the Women, Sports and the Environment (WSE) Symposium provides an opportunity to convene and support women from all sectors of the industry in this effort.

The highly interactive and collaborative session creates a platform to discuss the role women leaders can have in the development of a more sustainable future - using sports as an instrument of change to address community and environmental issues.

This year's symposium will be held in conjunction with the 2014 Summit in Santa Clara, CA July 21-23. The topic of focus? “Making decisions that support and promote healthier lifestyles.”

Last year, over 80 women leaders from the sports industry gathered for the first-ever WSE Symposium co-hosted by the U.S. EPA. The Alliance is pleased to be continuing and expanding this special event this year.

Women are primary influencers when it comes to creating healthier lifestyles in our communities and families. This has women uniquely positioned to make decisions that advance healthier lifestyles in both their businesses and their households. Through a panel of experts and breakout discussions led by sports and sustainability industry leaders, the 2014 WSE Symposium will explore the ways women utilize their unique leadership assets and decision making skills to directly and indirectly influence the products and resources that are brought into organizations and households, and consumer brand and marketing messaging in the industry.

The 2014 WSE Symposium will feature a premier speaker line-up including:

  • Val Fishman, VP Corporate Partnerships, Bonneville Environmental Foundation; Green Sports Alliance Board Member
  • Mary Harvey, Olympic Gold Medalist; Founder, Ripple Effect Consulting; Former COO, Women’s Professional Soccer; Green Sports Alliance Board Member
  • Gail Hunter, VP of Public Affairs + Event Management, Golden State Warriors
  • Liesl Holtz, Global Sports Marketing Manager + Director of Zero Waste, Oakley
  • Jennifer Regan, Principal, We Bring It On Inc.; Green Sports Alliance Board Member

The Alliance will welcome special guests from the green building movement including Elizabeth Heider, Chief Sustainability Officer at Skanska USA Inc. and Former Board of Directors Chair at US Green Building Council.

WSE Symposium participants will walk away with a better understanding of how women can leverage the sports industry and their professions to promote healthier lifestyles for employees, fans and entire communities. All participants will have the opportunity to further this engagement beyond the symposium as part of an on-going community of support.
