EPA Voluntary Program for Qualified Fireplaces and Retrofit Devices

Although EPA does not encourage the use of wood-burning fireplaces over other devices, it does urge those who want fireplaces to purchase the cleanest models available. EPA qualified fireplaces generate less airborne pollutants than unlabeled products. An EPA-qualified new fireplace should have a hang tag indicating compliance with EPA specifications. For example, the Phase 2 hang tag indicates fireplaces that are approximately 70% cleaner than older fireplace models. For EPA-qualified retrofit devices, the hang tag indicates that if properly installed in existing fireplaces, the device may reduce pollution by as much as 70%.
