Integrated Energy Modeling for First Cost Neutral High Performance Design

GBCI: 0920011763

Energy Modeling is often seen as a costly add-on service that is only necessary for projects pursuing LEED. An Architect and Engineer join forces to show how integrated and iterative energy modeling can identify first cost savings and protect high performance systems in value engineering, in addition to paying for itself within 1-3 months of operational savings.

About

Energy Modeling is often seen as a costly add-on service that is often left out of the design process when buildings only need to be code complaint. An Architect and Engineer join forces to show how integrated and iterative energy modeling can identify first cost savings, shift investment from mechanical to architectural systems, and protect high performance systems in the value engineering process. Presenters will share data from multiple project sizes and types that demonstrate how energy modeling typically pays back for itself within 1-3 months of operational savings. Presenters will share case studies of built projects where energy modeling identified substantial first cost savings, allowing high performance and deep green projects to come in first cost neutral or under budget, how this process downsized mechanical systems and provided opportunities for greater investment in architectural design features, and how these services paid for themselves in 1-3 months of operational savings.

Objectives

  1. Attendees will be able to offer a value proposition for energy modeling that will help make the case to clients for employing it in the design process.
  2. Attendees will understand how energy modeling fits into the design work flow and what kind of feedback it can provide at each stage of design.
  3. Attendees will understand some of the tools available to assess the impact of design decisions on the anticipated energy performance of a project.
  4. Attendees will have case studies and cost metrics for reference when advocating for integrated modeling in the design process.
